Reddit Shell offers CLI-Style Surfing in your Browser
There’s a lot of great info to glean from the users of Reddit. Unfortunately it’s not always the best site to have up on your monitor when your boss or supervisor traipses by on patrol.
But now thanks to Jason Botello we have a somewhat clandestine opportunity to sneak by undetected: Reddit Shell. This free webapp allows Reddit users to browse the site without ever needing to have Reddit’s well-known minimalist layout flash onto your monitor.
I first saw this advertised on Product Hunt where it got a lot of attention from users. With hundreds of thousands of subreddits, the Reddit community stretches far & wide to include millions of people from around the world. It’s fair to say Reddit Shell definitely fills a niche in this marketplace.
Right after landing on the homepage you’ll be presented with a list of commands. You can list from the homepage, from a subreddit, search for keywords or view comments on a particular thread.
It even allows users to log into their Reddit account if you need to check PMs or post a comment on a particular subject. This is basically a fully-fledged Reddit client without many pretty graphics… sorta exactly like Reddit.
Jason also released the full source code for free on GitHub if you’d want to check it out. Based on this same codebase he wrote another webapp named Product Hunt Shell which operates for the popular social site Product Hunt.
So whether you need to check Reddit for some info or just want to browse a few minutes, Reddit Shell will keep you protected and give the illusory appearance of a hard-working developer who just loves writing in shell.
