Most people think of art as a colorful canvas hung on a wall. The Oxford Dictionary defines art as “The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.” The cool folks at Meow Wolf decided to put their creative skills to the test in order to create a fascinating world of interactive art.

Established back in 2008, Meow Wolf is currently located in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The crew consists of over 200 artists from a variety of disciplines. These people include sculptors, painters, architects, videographers, photographers, music and audio engineers, writers, and more.

So, what exactly is all the fuss about? There are plenty of design agencies and art studios out there. What makes these guys any different? Well…

The crew at Meow Wolf creates interactive art that is both immersive and revolutionary. Their first permanent piece (as shown above) launched back in March of 2016. With the support of Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin, The House of Eternal Run showcases a multidimensional house where guests can explore and discover hidden passages, portals to new worlds, climbable structures, and much more.

The Due Return was an exhibit based on a fairytale ship that was settled on an alien landscape. The outside of the vessel bore marks of the ships previous voyages. Originally, the ship was used to transport various technologies. The inside of the ship provided rich detail into the lives of the ships passengers, and its integration with the technologies that it once carried. Talk about interactive art!

It was truly something to admire. One for the shear detail that was put into everything about it, and two for the pure imagination that went into thinking of something like this and bringing it to life.

Glitteropolis opened up back in November of 2011. It featured small, village-like structures, obelisks, and glyphs covered in… you guessed it, glitter. Glitteropolis was designed by 35 artists and built by 9 of them. This particular exhibit showcased vastly wild sights and sounds that were sure to make you want more.

So now, you can pick your mouth up off the floor, but it might fall right back down. Let’s talk about how interactive their website is. When you first get to meowwolf.com, you’ll notice that everything moves. It’s not just a normal hyperlink to another part of the website. It moves and changes shape and makes you feel like you’re looking at art right on the front page. It gathers the viewer’s attention and lights up the screen with a waterfall of colors.

If you’re interested in visiting some of these amazing interactive art exhibits, visit their website. Do set some extra time aside to navigate the website, though. Not because it’s hard to navigate, but because you’ll be there, staring at the artwork for hours. The nonprofit art collective plans on expanding their campuses all across the United States’ west coast. Soon, you’ll not only be able to visit them in New Mexico, but Las Vegas and Denver as well.
